Botanical Color Painting Workshop
This immersive workshop is an invitation to slow down and work deeply with color from plants. Together, we explore botanical pigments, learn how to mix and modify them, and paint directly onto mordanted natural fabric.
A central part of the day is dedicated to color mixing. Participants will create their own botanical color palette, learning how plant pigments behave, how to adjust tone and depth, and how subtle changes create very different results on fabric.
Rather than focusing on a single finished object, this workshop centres on process, color understanding, and mark-making. Throughout the day, you will create a small collection of hand-painted textile pieces. fabric you have made yourself, carrying your own palette, gestures, and decisions.
We will also work through the full process of setting botanical color on fabric, including steaming, so that participants gain a clear understanding of how color is fixed and made lasting. This knowledge allows you to continue working confidently with botanical color beyond the workshop.
These textiles are intentionally open-ended. They can later be sewn into an object, framed as wall art, stitched into a larger piece, or kept as personal color studies.
During the day, we will:
Learn about botanical pigments and how they behave on fabric
Mix our own plant-based colors and build a personal color palette
Explore tonal variation, layering, and simple modifiers
Paint freely and intuitively on pre-mordanted natural fabric
Learn how botanical color is fixed through steaming
Develop confidence in color choice and composition
All materials are provided, including mordanted fabric prepared in advance. No prior experience with natural dyeing is required — this workshop is suitable for beginners as well as experienced makers who wish to deepen their relationship with color.
You will leave with:
A small collection of hand-painted botanical-dyed fabric pieces
A clear understanding of the full botanical color process, from mixing to fixing
Textile material you can continue working with at home, in your own way
This workshop is for anyone curious about plant color, slow making, and the quiet satisfaction of creating something meaningful by hand.
Come as you are with curiosity, patience, and a willingness to explore.
