Freeform Crochet – Create Without Rules continuance
Freeform crochet is about improvising and exploring, and there is are so many ways to make something beautiful! In this workshop, textile artist Kirsten Zerbinis will help you build on the basic shapes and techniques learned in the beginner workshop. We work on more complicated motifs and discuss how to create a fabric that is suitable for a specific project – a wall hanging is different from a scarf!
What You’ll Learn:
In each session, Kirsten will demonstrate different techniques that you can add to your repertoire. Participants can choose what they would like to be shown:
· joining techniques to turn small patches into large pieces
· working stitches through the back loops or along the post to create an effect
· bullions, puff stitches, and ruffles
· creating a colour palette
· building depth/height with materials choice and pieces that break the plane
· shaping and finishing edges
· attaching a crocheted piece to a backing or frame
· surface embellishment
· fancy pieces like flowers, butterflies, and hyperbolic planes
Materials:
The instructor will bring a large selection of yarn for you to work with (included in the course fee). The yarn provided includes a lot of handspun yarn and leftovers from projects. It is mostly wool with some silk, alpaca, and other natural fibres. You are also welcome to bring your own yarn and any in-progress projects.
Requirements:
If you haven’t taken the beginner workshop you are still welcome to join this class if you feel confident in your crochet skills enough to improvise. If you are unsure, you are welcome to contact the instructor.
In general, participants should know how to do chain stitch, single crochet, and double crochet, both back-and-forth and in rounds. You should also know how to do a slip-stitch join.
Please bring your own hooks and a pair of scissors, although the instructor will have som tools you can borrow if necessary.
