Lace Knitting: Old Shale
Lace Knitting is nothing to be afraid of! Just like a meringue, it’s mostly air with a sweet, delicate structure around it. In this workshop, we’ll start with a simple, traditional lace pattern: the Old Shale pattern from the Shetland isles. You’ll see how intricate lace patterns are created with a clever arrangement of increases and decreases, and you’ll have a chance to try a few different charts from a stitch dictionary.
What You’ll Learn:
Reading a lace chart
Using stitch markers and lifelines
Left-leaning and right-leaning decreases, and yarn-overs
Blocking techniques for lace
Materials:
The instructor will provide yarn in a variety of weights. Please bring a 5mm needle, either straight or circular. For lace knitting, a sharper point is often preferred, and many beginners find that wooden needles lead to fewer tears!
Requirements:
Participants should know how to knit, purl, cast on, and cast off.
